How we print an edition

Every colour is its own stencil and its own pass through the press. Here is Lemon tree, one colour at a time.

Lemon tree, the four colours printed on top of each other.

Lemon tree, 4 colours, A2

  1. Pass 1 of 4, pink

    Pink goes down first

We cut one stencil for each colour. Pink is first, for the pot, the shelf and the sun behind the tree. Every sheet in the edition gets this colour before we wash the screen.

Pulling a colour across the screen with a wooden squeegee.
  2. Pass 2 of 4, yellow

    The lemons in yellow

The next day the lemons go on in yellow. Each sheet is pushed against three small stops on the bed to line it up, but paper moves a little, so every copy lands slightly differently.

Gloved hands pulling a squeegee through yellow ink on a screen.
  3. Pass 3 of 4, blue

Blue leaves turn green on yellow

The leaves are blue. Our inks are see through, so where blue crosses yellow it prints green. That gives us a fifth colour without a fifth screen.

Shelves of ink tubs in blue, green, red and teal.
  4. Pass 4 of 4, black

    Black branches last

The branches go on last in black. On this pass you can see how far each colour has moved on each copy, which is why we number them.

Squeegees with green, yellow and blue blades in a rack.
  5. After the last pass

    Dried, signed and numbered

The sheets dry on the rack for two days. Then we check every copy, sign and number it in pencil, and it goes into the shop. A four colour edition of 60 takes us about a week.

Prints, posters and cards

Everything is printed in the same studio with the same inks. Limited prints are signed and numbered. Posters and cards are printed in bigger runs, so they cost less.

Our prints in real rooms

So you can judge the sizes, we put our prints into photos of rooms. Every print page also has a wall planner drawn to scale.
