Question 1 of 3
The six scents by family:
Two of us make every candle at one long bench in Elmsworth. A batch is 48 jars of one scent, and we pour two batches a week.
Monday
We melt the soy wax to 80 degrees and stir in the fragrance oil at 8 percent of the weight.

Tuesday and Thursday
Each jar gets a cotton wick held straight by two sticks. We pour at 60 degrees and leave the jars overnight to set.
The next ten days
The jars rest on the shelf so the scent binds with the wax. A candle lit too early smells of very little.

Day eleven
We trim the wicks, add labels and lids and pack the orders. Orders placed before 1 pm go out the same day.

The first burn sets how the rest of the candle burns. These four steps keep it even all the way down.
Leave it lit until the melted wax reaches the glass all the way round. That takes 2 to 3 hours for a small jar and 3 to 4 for a large one. If you blow it out sooner, it burns a tunnel down the middle and wastes the wax at the sides.
Before every burn after the first, trim the wick to 5 mm while the wax is cold. A long wick makes a tall, smoky flame and leaves soot on the glass.
Burn it for up to 4 hours at a time, away from open windows and draughts. Put it out with the lid or a snuffer rather than blowing, and the room stays free of smoke.
Stop when 1 cm of wax is left, so the glass does not get too hot. Then post the jar back to us for a refill, or wash it with hot water and keep it.
